The challenge that we are focusing on is women’s lack of access to the law; ultimately resulting in a lack of justice. The current reality is that approximately 45% of women in South Africa live in abject poverty and abuse where legal services and information are a mere luxury! We think that the provision of legal information and services is a basic Human Right and a lack of these makes women more vulnerable and prone to abuse.
So what we do is; we travel to poor communities with a mobile office and provide (Pro Bono) legal information and services to women. We focus on Domestic Violence (Protection Orders), Marriage (Customary vs. Civil), Divorce (Process, Asset Distribution, Maintenance & Children’s Rights) and Wills.
So far we have impacted over 650 women; having visited 4 under privileged areas (Alexandra, Lenasia, Diepsloot & Westbury) with only one Attorney; Samantha. We have also been able to impact young women between the ages of 16-25years in the Eastern Cape, Free State, Mpumalanga and Pretoria; in partnership with Soul City ‘Rise Young Women Clubs’. Our current strategy for the project is to leverage off the immense resource of hours that Attorneys in the country hold and are obliged to dispense with each year. This would enable Lady Liberty to reach and empower many more women with a team of about 5 lawyers travelling in the mobile office (twice a month at first) while another team settles new and pending matters from their offices and within relevant Courts and Institutions.
